Fruits

Date:2014-07-24

To enhance the competitiveness of the industry, we should gradually adjust the direction of the industry to lower the pressure resulting from the imbalance between production and sale. We could promote high-quality production areas, increase automatic facilities to reduce labor demand, plant species that possess potential and characteristics, and evolve into a sustainable fruit industry that protects the environment and meets production needs. In addition, we expect to achieve high-quality production.

Mulberry

We have restored many mulberry species. We have also developed two new species, Miaoli No.1 and Miaoli No. 2, both of which have large and sweet fruits. They are delicious and can be eaten fresh or be processed into unique-tasting jam or drinks. Generally, mulberry gives one harvest per year in March or April; we have improved it to give an extra harvest in December.

Grape

Zhuolan Township is the major production area of grape in Miaoli, mainly producing Kyoho grape. A hybrid of western species, this grape is tetraploid, and it matures in summer or winter. The dark-purple skinned variety, sweet and tart, is popular in the market. The Miaoli District Agricultural Research and Extension Station uses gibberellins and streptomycin to produce grapes that are 95% seedless, stable in skin color, tasty, and large berry size (about 9-12 grams). We have tried to sell in domestic and international markets.
