ABSTRACT

Boxthorn (Lycium chinense) is a multi-branched shrub in the Solanaceae family (Solanaceae). Research on the cultivation of boxthorn was conducted in our station since 2002. In response to the needs of farmers, the breeding of new varieties began in 2013. After many years of observation and comparison, 102-CII-01 was selected, and named, Maioli No.1-Jhensin (珍芯). Maioli No.1 has the advantages of good summer shoot forming ability and short spines. Although its leaves weight is lighter, its shoot length is long and thornless, the edible shoot length is also long, as a consequence its yield is higher than that of traditional lines in harvesting young shoots. In terms of functional composition, the chlorogenic acid content of the new variety Maioli No.1 is as high as 2.87 mg/g DW, which has a high potential for the development of health care products. It is hoped that the promotion of a new variety will not only increase the income of farmers but also provide diversified health care products to facilitate needs of consumers.
